Description

An original lithograph by the Scottish artist David Roberts (1796–1864), titled Street Scene in Cairo and serving as the title page to Volume III of Egypt and Nubia, first issued in 1849.

The composition looks down a busy Cairo street toward the Al-Ghuri Mosque-Madrassa complex, built 1503–1505 under Sultan Al-Ghuri and a landmark of late Mamluk architecture. Its minaret and worked facades anchor the scene.

Roberts drew the originals during his travels of 1838–39; the plates were brought to the stone by the master lithographer Louis Haghe and printed by Day & Son, Lithographers to the Queen, for the publisher F.G. Moon, London. Printed on heavy matte India paper. Sheet approximately 15½ x 23½ in (39 x 60 cm); image approximately 12¼ x 18½ in (32 x 47 cm).

Condition

The sheet has been trimmed and reduced on all sides. Light toning consistent with age, with no tears or major defects; details remain clear and crisp and the colors vibrant.
