US $99.00 · or best offer
Description
An original late 18th-century Sufi manuscript leaf, written in refined Nasta'līq script on polished, medium-weight laid paper without watermark. The hand is an elegant black, with important spiritual terms picked out in red ink. The leaf measures approximately 20.5 x 33 cm (8 x 13 inches).
The manuscript belongs to the era in which Persian served as the language of intellectual, literary, and mystical discourse across the Ottoman Islamic world, continuing the tradition established by Rumi, Saadi, and Hafez. Leaves of this type circulated among scholars, Sufis, and literati devoted to the refinement of the soul.
Recto and verso form a continuous ethical and mystical discourse. Fasting (صوم) and moderation are set out as foundational practices; sleep, lust, and gluttony are described as veils (حجاب) obstructing the seeker; the pure heart (دل پاک) is figured as the throne of divine manifestation, attained through sustained ascetic struggle (ریاضت). Knowledge (علم) without sincere action (عمل) is condemned as sterile, and the governance of the self is presented as the prerequisite for any broader leadership.
