Ottoman Tinned Copper Pouring Vessel, Mamluk Revival
Hand-hammered tinned copper vessel, engraved · Ottoman Turkey · mid-19th century
US $600.00 · or best offer
Description
A mid-nineteenth-century Ottoman-period pouring vessel in hand-hammered tinned copper, engraved by hand in the Mamluk revival manner with floral, geometric, and animal motifs. The surface retains traces of its original tin lining, applied to resist oxidation and lengthen the vessel's working life.
A long, slightly curved spout doubles as the handle above a wide bowl, a form suited to pouring water, milk, olive oil, or ceremonial liquids, and so both functional and highly decorative. The craftsmanship belongs to the tradition of metal artisans working in Cairo and Anatolia, long renowned for fine copperware under Ottoman rule.
A similar, earlier example is held in the Benaki Museum, Athens.
