US $1,050.00 · or best offer

Caucasian belt of linked rectangular niello silver plaques with floral and geometric designs on a leather strap.
Linked niello silver plaques, each darkened with floral and geometric ornament.

Description

A belt built from intricately linked rectangular silver elements, each worked with floral and geometric ornament and darkened with niello, the blackened silver inlay used to throw fine detail into relief. The links are strung onto a leather strap, with overlapping links joining the ends.

The Russian maker's mark “NC” (“IS” in Cyrillic) appears on many of the links. The Kokoshnik marks and the 84 zolotnik stamps, indicating 875/1000 fineness, are not clearly discernible. The design belongs to the traditional Caucasian repertoire, with the Russian, Georgian, Armenian, and Azeri influences that circulate through the region's silverwork.

It measures approximately 28½ x ¾ inches (72 x 1.9 cm) and weighs 361 grams. Fully functional, it is as suited to wear as to display.
