Description
An Armenian priest's vestment, or epitrachelion, of the 19th-century Ottoman period. This long ceremonial textile was worn by clergy of the Armenian Apostolic Church during liturgical services and is among the most symbolically important garments of priestly office.
The field is woven in exceptionally fine silk brocade with a dense repeating floral pattern, the repetition tightly controlled across the full length, work characteristic of high-quality Armenian workshop production under Ottoman influence. Borders of metallic gilt silver thread frame the vestment and run along the central opening, retaining notable brilliance with natural areas of oxidation. The reverse is finished with a salmon-toned satin lining consistent with ecclesiastical construction of the period.
Armenian ecclesiastical textiles made under Ottoman rule reflect a synthesis of regional weaving traditions and long-standing church requirements. Examples surviving with metallic threadwork, full structure, and original fringe intact are increasingly scarce. Approximately 10½ x 49 inches (27 x 124 cm).
