Benin-Style Cast Bronze Snake Head

A finely cast Benin-style bronze snake head, made by the traditional lost-wax method that is a hallmark of West African metalwork. The modeling is detailed and lifelike, with raised circular motifs and incised patterning across the head. The open back suggests the piece may originally have served as an architectural element, ceremonial object, or shrine fitting.

The Kingdom of Benin, the Edo people of modern-day Nigeria, was renowned for bronze and brass sculpture produced by the artisans of the royal guild, work that adorned the Oba's palace and depicted deities, warriors, court officials, and symbolic animals. The serpent, or python, carried particular weight as an emblem of protection, spiritual power, and royal authority.

After 1897, when British forces removed thousands of Benin bronzes from the royal court, African artisans of the early 20th century began producing works in the same idiom for collectors and the international art market. This head belongs to that continuing tradition, and is likely the work of artisans inspired by the historical bronzes rather than a court original.
