Cast Bronze Mask in the Ife Manner, Yoruba Peoples

A finely cast bronze mask in the tradition of Ife and Benin metalwork, made by the lost-wax method. The face is modeled with the naturalism associated with Ife sculpture, almond-shaped eyes, carefully articulated features, while the casting itself follows the stylistic lead of the celebrated Benin Bronzes. Perforations run along the hairline and jaw, suggesting ceremonial or decorative mounting.

The artistic traditions of Ife and Benin are closely bound. The Benin Bronzes, made for the royal court of the Benin Empire, depict kings, warriors and deities with unusual realism, and later Yoruba artisans drew on them in works of this kind, blending Ife naturalism with Benin casting convention. Bronzes such as this served in religious ceremony, ancestral observance, or as prestige objects in elite households.

The mask stands approximately 33 cm (13 inches) high and weighs about 11 lb (5 kg). Acquired from a private collection specializing in African tribal art.
