Nias Adu Ancestor Figure Grouping

A carved wooden Adu ancestral grouping from Nias, North Sumatra, consisting of five standing male figures mounted along a horizontal support. Each is rendered with an elongated torso, rigid frontal stance, and finely incised headdress, the codified sculptural language for which the island is known.

Adu figures were carved to embody ancestral presence and were placed in village ceremonial spaces and domestic compounds, serving as protective intermediaries between the living and the spirit world. Comparable examples are held in institutional collections such as the Museum Rietberg.

Each figure varies subtly in its carving, particularly in headdress pattern and facial expression, indicating individual hand work rather than uniform production. Anatomical detail is simplified in accordance with Nias convention, with select elements indicated discreetly as part of broader themes of vitality and continuity rather than naturalistic description. The figures are secured with fiber lashings, likely a later stabilization but consistent with traditional methods of preservation.

The tallest figure stands approximately 30 cm (11¾ in); the group measures 30.5 cm (12 in) across. Grouped examples of this type are encountered less often than single figures.
