Baule Carved Wood Mask, Ivory Coast

A ceremonial mask of the Baule people of the Ivory Coast, West Africa, hand-carved from a single piece of wood in the third quarter of the twentieth century.

The composition is characteristically balanced: an elongated face, finely carved eyebrows, a delicately shaped mouth, symbolic facial markings, and a sculpted headdress. Raised elements, including additional sculpted faces and textured embellishment, sit above the brow. Remnants of white paint used to highlight details survive, tarnished and visible in the abraded areas.

Baule masks belong to ceremonial life, appearing in the Goli festival and other ritual performances, worn by skilled dancers at community celebrations, initiations, and funerary rites. They embody deities, ancestors, and symbolic figures within Baule mythology.

The mask stands approximately 17¼ inches (43.8 cm) high and weighs approximately 4 lb 7 oz (2 kg). Acquired from a private collection specializing in African tribal art.
