Bamun Bronze Transformation Mask, Cameroon

A transformation mask of the Bamun (Bamoun) people of western Cameroon, cast in bronze by the traditional lost-wax method in the early twentieth century. It stands approximately 33 cm (13 inches) high and weighs approximately 2,041 g (4 lb 8 oz).

In Bamun society, transformation masks speak to the capacity of leaders, ancestors, and spiritual beings to change form and move between the physical and supernatural realms, commonly through a fusion of human and animal features. This example has a stylized elongated snout, abstracted facial features, and intricate ornamentation, possibly signifying a hybrid of human and animal spirits; the horn-like radiating elements may stand for royalty, divine wisdom, or spiritual energy.

Such masks were worn by members of the Kwifoyn secret society, the elite governing body of the Bamun kingdom, in initiation ceremonies, royal court ritual, ancestral veneration, and funerary rites.

The Bamun Kingdom, established in the sixteenth century, was known for its metalworking, with lost-wax bronze casting reserved for royalty and secret societies. King Njoya (reigned 1895–1923) was a notable patron of the arts, commissioning metal masks and regalia that drew together Islamic, indigenous, and European influences.
