Bamun Bronze Ceremonial Mask with Raffia

A ceremonial mask of the Bamun (Bamoun) people of western Cameroon, cast in bronze by the lost-wax method in the first half of the twentieth century. The cheeks and nose carry the textured engraving characteristic of Bamun work.

The features follow Bamun convention: large almond-shaped eyes, a stylized nose, an open mouth with visible teeth, and geometric facial decoration associated with royal aesthetics, protection, wisdom, spiritual power. Circular ear loops suggest the mask was worn, suspended, or fixed to a larger ceremonial costume. It retains its original raffia fiber fringe, whose movement heightened the effect of the dance.

The Bamun Kingdom, part of the Tikar ethnic group, was known for advanced bronze casting developed in exchange with neighboring cultures, among them the Benin Kingdom of Nigeria. Masks of this kind served ceremonial performance, secret society initiation, and royal court ritual.

The mask measures approximately 10.5 inches (26.7 cm) in diameter and weighs 6 lb 11 oz (3 kg). Acquired from a private collection specializing in African tribal art.
