Ottoman Gilt Silver Filigree Brooch, Floral Leaf Form

A large brooch worked in fine gilt silver filigree, dating to the late nineteenth century. The form is a complex floral leaf, its scrolling openwork layered and arranged symmetrically around a central rosette boss. Gilded and oxidized finishes set up a tonal contrast that draws out the depth of the piece; three articulated lantern-form silver dangles hang at the base.

It is substantial in both scale and weight, approximately 120 mm long (about 4.7 inches) and 55.6 grams. The reverse retains its original pin and clasp, consistent with nineteenth-century Turkish jewelry construction.

Brooches of this type were worn with regional and ceremonial dress, particularly by Ottoman Armenian, Greek and Turkish women, and were typically produced in centers such as Istanbul, Trabzon, or the Balkans. The pierced floral motifs and geometric dangles reflect Islamic design principles alongside earlier Byzantine influences still active in Ottoman provincial work.
