Silver and Copper Inlaid Brass Plate with Arabic Calligraphy
Inlaid brass plate or tray · Middle Eastern, Cairo / Damascus / Jerusalem · early 20th century
US $155.00 · or best offer
Description
A large brass plate, equally a tray, of heavy gauge, inlaid in silver and accented in copper. The silver inlay is executed as Arabic calligraphy, worked with the precision that distinguished the metalworking shops of Cairo, Damascus, and Jerusalem, where such pieces were traditionally made by Jewish and Christian artisans renowned for the craft.
The copper accents read warmly against the brass, and the whole holds the eye at both arm's length and close range. Diameter approximately 28.5 cm (11 1/4 inches).
