Description

An incomplete multi-text composite Ottoman codex of 123 folios (246 pages, recto and verso), measuring approximately 15.5 x 21.5 cm (6 x 8½ inches). The volume gathers several distinct text blocks: the core Sunni creed, including the divine attributes and the theology of divine speech; Hanafi jurisprudence covering calculations of physical ritual purity thresholds, community obligations for preparing the deceased, and legal status and exemptions during pregnancy; and a Sufi commentary setting out spiritual objectives. The text block shows heavy evidence of historical use, study, and adaptive assembly.

The paper is old European rag laid paper produced by Italian mills for the Levant and Ottoman export markets between the 16th and 18th centuries. Backlighting reveals robust horizontal laid lines, vertical chain lines, and stylized wire-formed watermarks characteristic of the period. The outer margins have been trimmed.

The script is a clear, largely legible Ottoman Arabic hand, in fact several distinct anonymous hands, with no calligrapher named. Reflecting its assembly from different original codices, the pagination is irregular: at intervals the verso carries an Eastern Arabic numeral while the recto shows only a dot placeholder, and continuity breaks throughout. The work ends abruptly and has no colophon.

The volume is housed in a thick brown morocco leather binding with gilt-stamped borders and an inherited gilt calligraphic title block reading Civil Geography, salvaged from an entirely separate, secular manuscript and repurposed to protect these treatises.
