Brass marine compass on a gimbal mount inside an open solid wood deck box, the card showing a fleur-de-lis at North.
The gimballed compass in its fitted wooden deck box.

Description

A working-era gimballed marine compass by the Polaris Manufacturing Company (Polaris M.C. Co.), housed in its fitted solid wood deck box, a genuine navigation instrument rather than a decorative reproduction.

The compass sits in a full gimbal suspension, which keeps the card level under a vessel's movement. The wooden box retains its thick brass mounting plate on the base, drilled for a deck screw and confirming an intended permanent or semi-permanent shipboard installation. A classic Polaris identifying feature is present on the card: a fleur-de-lis at North (0°) and "M.C.CO." at South (180°). Card markings are clear and legible, the glass is intact with no cracks observed, and the needle appears free.

Polaris Manufacturing Company produced practical marine navigation instruments in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, supplying commercial vessels and private craft. On the strength of observable construction alone, brass housing, gimballed mount, printed card with fleur-de-lis North, fitted wooden deck box, the example is conservatively placed c. 1900–1930. No claim is made beyond what can be observed.
