Description

A C. Reichert Wien polarimeter, specifically a half-shadow saccharimeter, made in Vienna circa 1920. The instrument is built of heavy-gauge brass with quartz prism and glass optics, and represents Austrian precision optics at a level that stood alongside the finest work of Zeiss and Leitz in the early 20th century.

This unit bears serial number 836 and the clinical inventory mark F52, indicating laboratory service. Instruments of this type were used for the quantitative determination of sugar concentrations, reading to 0.1% by means of an integrated sliding vernier scale.

It is housed in its original mahogany fitted box, retaining the velvet-lined slots cut specifically for the brass tube.

Condition

The internal polarizing prisms remain exceptionally clear and the spectrum view through the eyepiece is sharp. The sliding vernier and adjustment rings move with smooth, calibrated resistance; all hinges are firm and functional. The brass carries an authentic aged patina without heavy oxidation or intrusive cleaning.
