Ottoman silver triangular amulet with filigree scrollwork and turquoise and red glass settings, suspended on a necklace with three silver coins.
The triangular filigree amulet with its coin-hung necklace.

Description

A triangular Ottoman amulet in .900 silver, hung on a necklace with three Ottoman silver coins. The face is worked in silver filigree scrollwork with floral designs, encrusted with turquoise and red glass; the reverse carries the Imperial tugra seal of the sultan who reigned from 1876 to 1909.

A sliding silver latch along the top edge opens the interior compartment, likely intended to hold protective prayers and Quranic verses. Amulets of this triangular form were carried as protective talismans, and the prayer compartment gives the piece a devotional dimension alongside its ornament.

The amulet measures approximately 65 x 40 x 12 mm (about 2½ x 1½ x ½ inches); the necklace runs about 18½ inches (47 cm) and the whole weighs roughly 69 grams.
