Chinese lacquer screen panels inlaid with mother-of-pearl mosaic depicting the Taj Mahal.
The lacquer panels, the Taj Mahal rendered in mother-of-pearl mosaic.

Description

A set of early 20th-century Chinese lacquer panels inlaid with mother-of-pearl mosaic, the composition given over to a view of the Taj Mahal. The scale is architectural rather than domestic, and the panels carry a considerable presence when shown together.

Each side panel measures approximately 43¼ × 13¾ in (110 × 35 cm); the central panel measures approximately 43¼ × 33¾ in (110 × 86 cm). The panels are suitable for mounting on a wall.

The subject places the group at the meeting point of Chinese lacquer craft and Indian and Islamic architectural imagery, a natural addition to collections in either field.
