An original sepia photograph by Jean Pascal Sebah showing the sanctuary of the Sultan Hassan Mosque in Cairo, a monumental building raised between 1356 and 1363. The image is captioned, numbered, and signed in the negative: at lower left, No: 17 Interiore de la Mosquée Sultan Hassan, Caire; at lower right, J. Sebah Phot.
The photograph measures approximately 21 x 27 cm (8¼ x 10½ in) and is mounted on board measuring approximately 35 x 43 cm (11 x 17 in).
Working alongside his father, Pascal Sebah, Jean Pascal Sebah became a leading photographer in Cairo and the Ottoman Empire from the mid-19th to the early 20th century. In 1888 he partnered with Policarpe Joaillier to open the celebrated Sebah & Joaillier studio in Constantinople; in 1899 the firm was granted the title of Ottoman Palace Photographers. The studio was widely known for views of mosques, palaces, museums, and panoramas of Egypt and Syria.

Condition
Good for its age, with some stains. There is water damage to the lower right of the matting, along with some toning, further staining, and edge tears.
