Kütahya Spherical Mosque Hanging Ornament

A glazed ceramic sphere made to hang, most likely below or in conjunction with a mosque lamp. Comparable examples are preserved in major collections, among them the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Kütahya, 19th century) and the Brooklyn Museum (Iznik, 16th century). Museum records note that the precise function of such spheres is not fully understood; they were intended to hang from the ceilings of mosques and other religious structures, generally seen from below or at a distance.

The decoration follows the Iznik idiom, floral motifs in red Armenian bole (an iron-rich slip that yields the distinctive sealing-wax red), cobalt blue, turquoise, and green on a white ground. A defining trait of Armenian bole is that the red stands slightly proud of the surrounding glaze, a raised texture that can be felt by hand and is one of the key indicators used to separate authentic Ottoman-period ceramics from later imitations.

Kütahya production flourished after the decline of Iznik and carried on well into the 19th century. Its wares were modeled on earlier Iznik prototypes but often show more deliberate brushwork and slight variation in pigment quality. The orb stands approximately 135 mm (5¼ in) high.
