Tall hand-engraved brass brazier from Jerusalem with pierced floral fretwork cover, bronze star and crescent finial, and cast side handles. — The pierced domed cover, crowned with its bronze star and crescent.

Description

A brass brazier of traditional form, hand crafted in the middle of the twentieth century by artisans of Jerusalem, long renowned for their metalwork.

Cover, body, and base are fully chased and engraved with intricate animal and floral motifs together with pseudo-Arabic calligraphy. Floral open fretwork forms the vent holes in the cover, setting light and shadow against the brass. The domed cover is crowned with a bronze star and crescent, a mark of Ottoman Turkish influence that persisted in the form well into the mid-twentieth century.

The body sits on a conical round base secured with a large screw nut and carries cast bronze "ear-flap" side handles; the removable coal bin has smaller cast handles of similar design. Height approximately 62 cm (24½ in), diameter approximately 38 cm (15 in). The piece dismantles for shipping and reassembles without tools.

Condition

Very good condition showing use, and left unpolished. Warm patina with minor spots and scratches; the rim is slightly bent. It can be highly polished if a brighter presence is wanted.
