Description
A Pre-Columbian effigy offertory vessel carved from volcanic stone, in the form of a seated figure with a bowl balanced atop the head. The stone is coarse and granular, consistent with basalt or a related volcanic material, and the surface retains remnants of faded red pigment. Approximately 9.25 inches (23.5 cm) high.
Probably Mexica (Aztec), Late Postclassic, c. 1325–1521 CE. Figures of this type are widely regarded as ritual effigies associated with the Mexica fire deity Huehuetéotl, or more broadly with temple offering practice. The squatting posture, arms drawn in and a receptacle carried on the head, symbolized the sustaining of sacred fire or the presentation of offerings to the gods.
Close examination reveals not only traces of red pigment but what appears to be a thin white lime-based preparatory ground beneath the color, an undercoating commonly described in the scholarly literature as stucco or gesso, and widely employed in Mexica and broader Mesoamerican stone sculpture to give pigment a receptive surface and a more durable polychrome finish. Both underlayer and pigment survive here, indicating the vessel was once brightly painted.
The bowl served as a receptacle for copal incense, food, or other ritual deposits, making the vessel a conduit between human ceremony and divine forces.
