Description

A cast silver ring surmounted by a bird, modeled fully in the round and perched atop the table. The piece also shows the casting knob characteristic of Seljuk-style rings.

The Seljuk Turks, who ruled across Central Asia and the Middle East from the eleventh to the fourteenth centuries, were central to the development of Islamic metalwork, and are known for advanced casting technique and refined design. Many Seljuk rings carry casting knobs or ridges along the shank; surviving examples are scarce and typically come from excavated contexts.

Three-dimensional figural work of this kind is unusual, and delicate cast rings with figures seldom surface on the antique market. The small proportions suggest it may have been made for a woman's hand. Total weight approximately 9.9 grams; the bird measures about 15 × 8 mm and the inner ring diameter about 19 mm.
