Two Ottoman Tile Fragments, Iznik and Iznik Style

Two Ottoman-era architectural ceramic fragments, offered together as one lot. Both are frit-body underglaze tiles in the classic cobalt and turquoise palette, attributable to late Iznik output and to Iznik Style workshop adaptations. They are salvaged wall-tile remnants with original surfaces, unrestored.

The first, an Iznik Style fragment of the 18th century, measures approximately 72 x 36 x 11 mm: a triangular break carrying a partial floral motif in turquoise and cobalt, a typical interpretation of Ottoman design and color. The second, an Iznik fragment of the late 17th to 18th century, measures approximately 80 x 41 x 11 mm, a white fritware body with cobalt linework and Armenian bole red highlights, preserving a segment of scrolling floral border.

Ottoman architectural tiles of the late classical period were made in a quartz-frit matrix with underglaze pigments fired at high temperature, a technology perfected at Iznik in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries before demand shifted east in the eighteenth. The cobalt and turquoise palette, the bole red where present, and the curvilinear floral drawing furnish the established typological basis for dating and attribution.
