Description
An Ottoman sales contract for a menzil, a house-property, in Konya, dated 20 July 1874. The text is executed in careful calligraphy on thick, light-toned European watermarked laid paper, with official seals affixed and a faint embossed seal below the header. The calligrapher is not named.
The scroll is unbound and measures approximately 77 × 26 cm (about 30⅓ × 10¼ inches). Legal documents of this kind record the ordinary business of a provincial Ottoman town in the hand of its professional scribes, and the sheet frames handsomely as wall art, a worthy addition to an Islamic art collection.
