Description
An original 1896 stone lithograph titled Exposition Russe by Caran d'Ache, the satirist and illustrator whose military subjects were among the sharpest visual commentary of the Belle Époque. The sheet is Plate No. 70 from Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, the series assembled under the direction of Jules Chéret.
Printed by Imprimerie Chaix, Ateliers Chéret, Rue Bergère 20, Paris, the series issued reduced-format lithographic editions of the finest French posters of the period. Here a Russian soldier rides on horseback, raising his Cossack hat, humor and precision in equal measure.
The sheet bears the blind-stamped embossed seal of Les Maîtres de l'Affiche in the lower right margin, present only on original issues and visible from both recto and verso. Chromolithograph on wove paper, printed one side; 29 x 40 cm (approx. 11.4 x 15.75 in).
