Dutch Delft Tile with a Pastoral Scene

An early example of Dutch Delftware, hand-painted in cobalt blue on a white tin-glazed earthenware ground. At the center stands a female figure holding a long pole or staff; two snail-like creatures rest atop stylized mounds, flanked by foliate vegetation and low shrubs. A short fence or hedgerow closes the distance, and the ground line suggests a shoreline or the edge of still water.

The tile is square, measuring approximately 5 x 5 in (12.7 x 12.7 cm) and about 3/8 in (1 cm) thick. Notably, it lacks the floral corner motifs that became widespread in later Delft production, an absence that supports an attribution to the earlier period of manufacture, circa 1580–1620.

Despite the expected marks of age, the brushwork retains strong visual clarity, and the tile reads as a confident early statement of Dutch ceramic landscape composition.
