"Turc en Habit d'Hiver" by Benjamin Jollivet, c. 1800

A French engraved study of Ottoman Turkish winter dress, titled "Turc en Habit d'Hiver", Turk in Winter Costume, by the engraver Benjamin Jollivet, made around 1800. The linework records the textures of the garments closely: the embroidery, the weight and fall of the fabric, the layering against cold.

The plate belongs to the Recueil de cent estampes representant differentes nations du Levant (Collection of One Hundred Engravings Representing Different Nations of the Levant), a landmark series that drew on the pioneering work of Jean-Baptiste Vanmour (1671–1737) and his engraver collaborator J. Haussard, from 1714. Jollivet's version predates the more romanticized Orientalism of the nineteenth century, taking instead a documentary approach to costume.

The print is presented in a modern wooden frame with protective glass, measuring 10½ × 13½ inches (27 × 34 cm), and is ready for display.
