Qadiriyya Sufi Ijazah Scroll, Dated Safar 1229 AH (1814)

A monumental Ijazah, a certificate of spiritual authority, from the Qadiriyya Sufi Order, issued in the middle of Safar 1229 AH, corresponding to February 1814. The scroll measures approximately 83 x 9.5 inches (211 x 24 cm) and constitutes a formal transmission of spiritual lineage and teaching authority.

The Qadiriyya is among the most venerable of Sufi orders, founded by Sheikh Abdul-Qadir al-Jilani (d. 1166). The manuscript sets out the complete Silsila, the chain of transmission tracing the recipient's authority back through the masters of the order to the Prophet Muhammad, and bears the calligraphic seal of Sayyid Mahmoud al-Qadiri, the grantor of the authority. A section containing the Wasiyya, or spiritual will, of the order is also present. The text is written in clear professional Naskh in carbon black ink with red rubrics.

The scroll opens with a magnificent Unwan, an illuminated headpiece in traditional Ottoman style, with heavy application of genuine shell gold (zar-nigar) and vibrant mineral pigments including lapis blue and vermilion. Floral motifs and geometric "Rumi" patterns are characteristic of institutional craftsmanship in the early 19th-century Ottoman provinces.

It is executed on European laid paper carrying a rare "Apple" watermark, identifying the sheet as a premium export from European mills, likely French or Italian, produced for the Ottoman market. The original 19th-century leather protective scroll cover accompanies the manuscript.
