Hand-engraved brass tray · Fez, Morocco · mid-20th century

US $260.00 · or best offer

Large circular Moroccan brass tray engraved across its entire face with concentric bands of geometric, floral, and calligraphic ornament.
The full engraved field, hand polished to bring up the brass.

Description

A large vintage brass tray from Fez, dating to the mid-twentieth century, worked entirely by hand. The heavy sheet is engraved across its full surface with interlocking geometric fields, floral scrollwork, and bands of pseudo-Arabic calligraphy, a traditional form carried out by artisans long renowned for their skill in metalwork.

It is a substantial object, roughly 68 cm (27 inches) across and weighing about twelve pounds. At that scale it reads equally well as a serving tray, a low table top, or a wall-mounted disc where the engraving can catch raking light.
