Ottoman Silk Coin Purse with Gilt Silver Threads
Crocheted silk and gilt silver coin purse · Ottoman Turkey · late 19th century
US $60.00 · or best offer
Description
A small purse worked in silk and gilt silver threads, made in the late nineteenth century during the Ottoman period in Turkey. The handiwork could be Armenian, Balkan, Greek, or Turkish, the crochet traditions of the region shared forms and stitches freely, and attribution to any one of them is not certain.
It measures approximately 94 x 144 mm (3.7 x 5.7 inches). A row of loops runs along the top, where a pull string once drew the mouth closed over the coins inside.
A worthy addition to a collection of textile art from the Ottoman world.
