Mughal Cast Bronze Ewer (Aftaba) with Lion-Head Handle

A nineteenth-century Mughal bronze ewer, or aftaba, from North India. The construction is heavy cast bronze, with engraved decoration running across the globular body, the neck and the lid. The spout is long and gently tapering.

The handle terminates in a stylized lion head, a classic element of Mughal design, and the whole retains its original aged patina. It stands approximately 10.5 inches (26.7 cm) high and weighs about 6 lb 8 oz (2.95 kg).

A solid and decorative example of Mughal metalwork, of interest to collectors of Islamic, Indo-Persian and Indian antiques. The surface may be brought to a high polish if a brighter presence is preferred.
