Antique Shirvan Kilim Bag Face, Caucasus
Flatwoven wool and cotton bag face · Shirvan, Azerbaijan · late 19th century
US $160.00 · or best offer
Description
A Shirvan kilim bag face from Azerbaijan in the eastern Caucasus, hand-woven in the late nineteenth century. The multicolored geometric design is characteristic of the region's fine flatweaves, drawn in the compact vocabulary of forms that Shirvan weavers carried across generations.
Vegetable-dyed wool with undyed white cotton in a weft-faced weave, over a twisted wool warp foundation. The fine handle and clear palette reward close looking.
Approximately 1'9" x 2'0" (53 x 61 cm). Bag faces of this size sit easily as a wall hanging, a pillow face, or a chair back.
