Handwritten Ottoman Turkish inheritance document in Arabic script on watermarked laid paper.
Ottoman court calligraphy on Joynson Superfine laid paper, Edirne, 1878.

Description

An original 19th-century Ottoman court record, handwritten in Ottoman Turkish in Arabic script and executed in an accomplished hand. The document is an estate record, possibly part of a Şer’iye Sicili, or Islamic court register, addressing the disposition of property and other legal obligations among heirs following a death, settled under Sharia jurisdiction.

Several parties are named with their roles in the proceedings, among them Hafız Hasan Efendi, Hafız Mahmud Efendi, Hüseyin Bey, Hafız Mustafa, Mehmed Ağa, and Yusuf Ağa. Religious-legal terms such as “şer’an” (legally) and “veraset” (inheritance) appear in the text, which closes with the names of the court scribes and signatories. The city of Edirne (Adrianople) is clearly mentioned, confirming the provincial origin.

The sheet measures 232 x 363 mm (approx. 9.1 x 14.3 in) on heavy, parchment-like European laid paper bearing a bold uppercase JOYNSON SUPERFINE watermark, clearly visible when held to the light, of interest to paper historians and watermark researchers as well as to students of late Ottoman legal writing.
