Description
An original 15th-century leaf from a Latin Vulgate Bible printed at Strasbourg, attributed to Johann Grüninger (attribution unconfirmed). The text is set in double-column Gothic blackletter, approximately 52 lines to the column, with initials rubricated by hand in red.
The recto (headed Danielis) carries Daniel's final vision and the angel's prophecy concerning the kings of Persia and Greece; the verso (Liber) continues through Daniel 11 with the wars between the kings of the north and south. The leaf measures approximately 20.5 x 29 cm (8 x 11.4 in).
Printed on fine laid rag paper with a visible watermark and clear chain lines, the sheet shows strong, even inking and wide margins. Early marginal notes are present but unobtrusive. It is a characteristic product of the incunabula period (1455–1500), when books were printed mechanically yet still decorated by hand in the manner of manuscripts.
